A new work for Albert Cerulo

October 14th, 2019

Tonight is the premiere of a new work commissioned by Albert Cerulo, Expanding Rhythms in Harmonic Time.

Al came to me and asked me to write a work for solo bass drum. Quite the challenge, considering how wrapped up in tonality so much of my work is. Al was well aware of this and asked me to write this work for just that reason.

I think this is my most minimal work to date, and I'm thoroughly pleased with how it turned out. Our first rehearsals bent time in a truly spectacular way, and I'm excited to see how a real audience reacts to such spare material.

This work is all about subtleties, as so much great Minimalism is. The first notes force you to reconsider how you listen, and I hope the journey is worth it.
